UK based innovation and design studio Cohda explored the capabilities of near-infrared spectroscopy to easily identify waste packaging materials at home. Due to a lack of knowledge combined with the constant change of what can and can’t be recycled, an estimated 60% of recyclable materials end up in household waste. R.I.D is a small handheld kitchen device that can scan and identify the material used in the packaging.
“Although an R.I.D solution does not eliminate the use of plastics, it shifts us to a more circular economy requiring minimum changes to existing processes and infrastructure.”
