The "4 per 1000" Initiative, headquartered in Montpellier, is a global effort aimed at combating climate change and promoting sustainable agriculture through the enhancement of soil carbon sequestration. This international initiative brings together governments, research institutions, and organizations from around the world. Its core objective is to increase the world's soil carbon stocks by an annual growth rate of 0.4%, equivalent to 4 per 1000, thus mitigating the impacts of global warming and ensuring food security. Through research, advocacy, and collaboration, the "4 per 1000" Initiative plays a pivotal role in advancing agricultural practices that simultaneously benefit both the environment and agriculture, contributing to a more sustainable and resilient future.
Compostable packaging could also promote the carbon cycle through industrial composting and thus help to store more carbon in soils instead of blowing it into the atmosphere through so-called "thermal recycling", as is often the case with conventional plastic packaging.
