German-born designer and researcher Julia Lohmann created a transdisciplinary platform, called the “Department of Seaweed” (DoS), for the exploration of seaweed as a sustainable resource. The DoS works in dialogue with an expanding network of experts from science, design, art, crafts, philosophy, policy and justice in order to gain a fundamental knowledge of the marine organisms and their potential as a design material - possibly serving as a sustainable replacement for leather, textile, wood, paper and plastic in future.
