California based toy company Mattel opts in the circular economy movement with a recycling program that will let consumers send back outgrown toys to be recycled into new products.

Mattel PlayBack is designed to recover and reuse materials from old Mattel toys, supporting the company’s goal to achieve 100% recycled, recyclable or bio-based plastic materials across all products and packaging by 2030, according to an article by Anne Stych on Bizjournals.com. For materials that cannot be repurposed as recycled content into new toys, Mattel PlayBack will either downcycle those materials into other plastic products or convert them from waste to energy. The PlayBack program is meant to be a part of a broader sustainability strategy and efforts to teach children about protecting the planet.
