Members have backed a sweeping ban which will include plastic drinking straws, stirrers, cotton buds, cutlery, plates and sticks for balloons, according to a post by Rose Brooke on eppm. The products will be illegal by 2021. Moreover EU states will be obligated to recycle 90 per cent of their plastic bottles by 2025.

The 571-53 vote on Wednesday (October 24th) followed the bill proposed by Belgian MEP Frederique Ries. Ries said the result was a “victory for or oceans, for the environment and for future generations”.
