In 2013, at the suggestion of oceanographer Charles Moore, geologist Patricia Corcoran and artist Kelly Jazvac travelled to Hawaii to study a new type of stone they have described as 'Plastiglomerate.' It consists of a mix of molten plastic debris and beach sediment, including sand, wood, and rock. Also of note is the origin of the plastic debris found: it mostly appears to be foreign to Hawaii.
